- BF: Why are you so violent?
- Me: Duh. Because I play roller derby.
- BF: I think you play roller derby because you're violent.
- Me: I think it's a cyclical problem.
We have picked our names and they have been submitted. As soon as we are allowed to use them I was planning on changing some of my online pseudonyms to my derby name. Then I thought why not just set up another account like I did with the blog. I don’t think I am changing the name of this blog, Gears of Derby is too cool!! Some of the girls on my team have made facebook fan pages for their derby alter egos. I made the page and have yet to populate it. Decisions, decisions. What do you do? How do you promote your derbyness?
I am still hurt. Instead of pouting and drinking beer I am going to go to practice and NSO until I can skate again (which will be monday).
Today I tried out my freshly adjusted skates. The only issue is that the toe stop is in a different place and if I am not paying attention, I am going to eat it. Other than that, a 1/4 of an inch makes some difference.
I went to the only skate rink in town and spent a few hours rolling around. Well my husband asked if I wanted to race. I kept him behind me for all three laps when suddenly he cut the inside and was next to me. I notice with my super derby awareness that he was off balance. I reach out and gently pushed him toward the ground. EPIC WIPEOUT!! I skated to victory. Every race is practice for a bout.
After assessment in the beginning of April I have been skating only with the team. I went to the rink to practice skating backward because one of our coaches insists that if we can skate backward then everything else is easy. I can do two laps self propelling back ward. I hope I get better at this fast.
I am having a seriously difficult time with this name thing. I didn’t think it would be this hard. I thought of something clever and maybe mean then I could concentrate on the being the badass blocker everyone is afraid of.
I had a list of names and I either wasn’t in love with them or their were too many variations on twoevils.org. One of the vets has a list and I found an awesome name. I check the availability on twitter and found out about a girl skating in London with that name then when I googled the name I found another skater in Virginia. The issue is that it takes so long to get on the registry so I don’t know of these women have attempted to register this name. For right now my name, like the rest of the noobs is Hey Meat.
I love being a blocker. I know that we are suppose to be well rounded players, but there is nothing like taking out a shitty or blah day on some of your new best friends. I felt like I was actually doing something right.
ToTaL geek moment: one of the vets high-fived me after I hit someone!!!!
Thanks! I’ll do that.
